Champions Bidvest Wits find form to beat high-flying Baroka

Defending champions Bidvest Wits claimed a much-needed victory at high-flying Baroka FC on Sunday for what they will hope is a reversal of fortunes in the Absa Premiership.

Vincent Pule scored the only goal of the game just before halftime after he was teed-up by Thabang Monare to inflict a first defeat of the season on top-of-the-table Baroka.

It was just a second clean sheet of the campaign in 11 matches for Wits, who had shown none of the form that had lifted them to a first ever league title last season.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt had surprised in his team selection by handing a first PSL appearance to goalkeeper Kyle Peters ahead of the more experienced Moeneeb Josephs and Darren Keet, with the latter on the bench.

It was also the first time Baroka have failed to score in a game since their league opener when they were held 0-0 by Polokwane City.

Chippa United came from a goal down to pile on the misery for Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy and claim a 2-1 win at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London.

Lyle Lakay had blasted City ahead early with a volley and the Cape Town side kept that lead to the break.

However, six minutes after the restart, Abel Mabaso brought the home side level with a speculative shot on an angle that nestled in the net at the far post.

The winner arrived when 35-year-old veteran Katlego Mashego reacted quickest to turn home the rebound after Kurt Lentjies' initial shot had been saved.
