Barca Women thrash Atleti in Spanish Clasico

BARCELONA -- Spanish champions Atletico Madrid saw their 100 percent start to the season ended in emphatic fashion on Saturday as they were hammered 6-1 by title rivals Barcelona.

Barca won their opening fixture 9-1 against Tacon -- who will become known as Real Madrid next season -- but it is their fixture against Atletico which is known as the Clasico of women's football in Spain.

A surprise draw at Rayo Vallecano last weekend, though, meant the Blaugrana went into the fixture two points behind Atletico, but they are now one point clear and top of the league ahead of the rest of this weekend's games.

Atletico, who have won the Primera Division in each of the past three years, took a second-minute lead at the Johan Cruyff Stadium when Amanda Sampedro converted from close range.

Barca, in search of their first league title since 2015, bounced back almost immediately when Jenni Hermoso scored from the penalty spot.

Mariona Caldentey then put the hosts ahead just before the 30-minute mark as they began to run riot for the second game running at their new home -- inspired once again by the brilliant Caroline Graham Hansen.

An own goal from Kenti Robles and a composed finish from striker Asisat Oshoala made it 4-1 before the break and there were two more goals in the second half.

Oshoala added another and Silvia Meseguer turned into her own net after some dazzling dribbling from Hansen, with Aissatou Tounkara sent off for a second yellow card late on for the well-beaten Atletico.
