Argentina's Lionel Messi feeling 'less pain' after hurting back - team doctor

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is feeling less pain after suffering a bruised lower back in Argentina's friendly defeat of Honduras on Friday, according to the Albiceleste's team doctor.

Messi remained on the ground after a knee to his torso during the match, and was seen holding his back as he gingerly walked off the field in the 64th minute.

Television cameras then showed trainers rubbing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's lower back on the sidelines before taking him into the tunnel.

After a a visit to a local clinic for tests, Messi was diagnosed with a deep bruise in his lumbar region.

Speaking to La Nacion, Argentina team doctor Daniel Martinez says the 28-year-old is improving.

"Messi is better, he has less pain. His recovery is day-to-day, there are various treatments for this type of hit," Martinez said.

"When you have less discomfort in the region, you can have massages that can help to alleviate the pain."

The injury has made Messi's status for the upcoming Copa America Centenario uncertain, however. The 1993 winners will open the tournament against defending champions Chile on June 6 in Santa Clara, California.
