Host India's preparations ahead of their opening match against Iran in the AFC Women's Asian Cup were affected after two members of the squad tested positive for COVID-19.

"Two members of the Indian Women's Senior National Team for the AFC Women's Asian Cup India 2022 have tested positive for COVID-19, and are currently in isolation at a designated medical care facility. The AIFF prioritises the health and safety of its players, and are following all the necessary health protocols as have been laid down by the AFC," a statement from AIFF read.

According to a report from PTI, one of the players who tested positive would've featured in the playing XI against Iran at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday (January 20).

AIFF president Praful Patel had earlier said that matches will not be cancelled if 13 players are available in each of the two competing teams. "The affected player or players will be isolated but the teams will be fielded as long as 13 players (in each team) are available," Patel said.

Earlier, Japan's star forward Mana Iwabuchi also tested positive after arriving in India. The Japan Times reported that she is asymptomatic and has not been in close contact with other members of the team because she travelled separately for the event.

After Iran, India will face Chinese Taipei on January 23 and China on January 26.
