Tottenham Hotspur captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was arrested in central London on Friday morning and charged with drunken driving after failing a roadside breathalyser test, police said.
The 31-year-old was stopped at around 2:20 a.m. and was taken to Charing Cross police station, where he was formally charged before being released on bail.
Lloris, who is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Sept. 11, apologised for the incident in a statement released on Friday evening.
"I wish to apologise wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my teammates, the manager and all of the supporters," he said.
"Drink driving is completely unacceptable, I take full responsibility for my actions and it is not the example I wish to set."
Lloris joined Tottenham in 2012 and has started both of their Premier League games this season after winning the World Cup with France last month.
A Metropolitan Police statement on his arrest said: "A man has been charged following a routine patrol stop in Gloucester Place, W1.
"Hugo Lloris, 31, of East Finchley was charged with drink driving on Friday, 24 August. He has been bailed to return to Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 11 September."
The news emerged only after Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino hosted his news conference ahead of Spurs' game away to Manchester United on Monday.
Tottenham have not commented on Lloris' availability for the match but released a brief statement on the goalkeeper's arrest.
"The club takes matters such as this extremely seriously and it will be dealt with internally," a club spokesperson said.
Should the club choose to drop Lloris for the game, Spurs could turn to Michel Vorm, who was on the bench for the opening two games of the season, and whose professionalism Pochettino has often praised.
