Eintracht end Union Berlin's unbeaten Bundesliga start

Eintracht Frankfurt ended Bundesliga leaders Union Berlin's unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 home win on Saturday courtesy of goals fromĀ Mario GotzeĀ and Jesper Lindstrom that moved them into the top five.

Forward Randal Kolo Muani skilfully beat Union defenders Diogo Leite and Timo Baumgartl to cut back the ball for Gotze, who sent it into the net in the 12th minute to put the hosts ahead.

Kolo Muani's effort was blocked and defender Luca Pellegrini's volley clipped the top of the crossbar before Lindstrom extended Eintracht's lead to cap a clinical first-half performance.

Lindstrom seized on Paul Jaeckel's sloppy clearance and moved past the defender with ease before dummying Baumgartl to bury a smart finish past goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow three minutes before the break.

Eintracht were reduced to 10 men after Kolo Muani received a second yellow card in the 68th minute but saw out the victory thanks to goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who denied Jannik Haberer and Tim Starke in a spirited but ultimately fruitless second-half display from the visitors.

The Berliners, previously the only undefeated team left in the league, retained their place at the summit after Borussia Dortmund lost 3-2 at Cologne.

Union are level on 17 points with Freiburg but lead the standings on goal difference. Bayern Munich are two points behind in third, with a better goal difference than Dortmund.

Eintracht, who host Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League on Tuesday, are fifth with 14 points from eight games.
