Chivas USA beat Real Salt Lake despite lack of possession

CARSON, Calif. -- Felix Borja scored on a rebound in the 47th minute, and Chivas USA snapped a 12-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Sunday.

Chivas USA (7-18-6) also ended a seven-game losing streak by conceding 74.1 percent possession to Real Salt Lake (13-8-10) while waiting for opportunities to counter. Rich Balchan obliged with an errant back pass that Erick Torres easily intercepted. Torres pressed forward for a chip shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back to Borja for his first goal in a Chivas USA uniform.

Balchan entered in the 39th minute as a substitute for Chris Schuler, who suffered a facial contusion -- and possibly a broken nose -- after colliding with Nat Borchers.

Nick Rimando saved Torres' penalty kick in the 64th minute. But Real Salt Lake failed to capitalize and missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot.
