MANCHESTER -- Manchester United are set to make a decision about whether Paul Pogba needs surgery on his hamstring injury next week, sources have told ESPN FC.
Pogba has been sidelined since Sept. 12 after suffering the muscle problem during the 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League.
Manager Jose Mourinho insisted at a news conference on Friday he still has "no idea" how many games the 24-year-old will miss.
Following the 4-0 win over Everton on Sunday, the United manager said he does not know whether the France international will be out for "12 weeks or 12 days."
But sources have told ESPN FC that the lack of a concrete timeline for Pogba's comeback is because United are yet to settle on the best course of action.
The club have been in touch with Finnish muscle repair specialist Sakari Orava with a decision set to be made about whether or not surgery is required in the next few days.
The 72-year-old surgeon, who has also worked with David Beckham and Pep Guardiola, has already operated on Ousmane Dembele this month after the Barcelona forward ruptured a tendon.
"His injury is a little different to Dembele, so he can heal without surgery," Orava told Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
Pogba's injury is not as severe as the one Dembele suffered against Getafe -- the 20-year-old's third game for his new club following a €105 million move from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
Pogba underwent a scan at Carrington the day after he was forced off in the first half against Basel with further tests using different imagery carried out last week.
United were hopeful the problem would heal without an operation, but sources have told ESPN FC that if there is no sign of progress, Pogba could have surgery in Finland in an attempt to speed up his recovery.
United play Southampton on Saturday before games against CSKA Moscow and Crystal Palace ahead of the international break.
After the two-week lay-off, United face four away games in a row against Liverpool, Benfica, Huddersfield and Swansea.
In the immediate aftermath of Pogba's injury, sources told ESPN FC United were fearful he would miss the trip to Anfield on Oct. 14 after initial scans revealed a muscle tear rather than just a strain.
Mourinho told a news conference on Friday: "Again, it is a great opportunity for other players to play. I am not going to cry or be counting the days for Paul to be back, not at all. Until then, I trust my people.
"Every injury is a different injury. I cannot tell you there is a rule about injured players. Not at all."
