Emre Can: Liverpool still targeting second place in Premier League

Emre Can is still confident that Liverpool can secure a second-placed finish in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool's defeat at Manchester United on Saturday saw Jose Mourinho's side open up a five-point gap in the battle for the runners-up spot, while Tottenham Hotspur's win at Bournemouth also led to the Reds dropping down to fourth in the table.

However, Can is hopeful that Liverpool can alter their league ranking in the final eight matches of the season.

"It was very important for second place as well. That's why it feels [even] more disappointing," Can, speaking to the club's website, said of the United defeat.

"But we still have the chance to be second in the table, we have a lot of matches. Now we have to see what happens from game to game -- we'll try to win ours and see where we are at the end of the season."

Jurgen Klopp lamented the two errors Liverpool made at Old Trafford that directly led to Marcus Rashford's two goals.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold apologised on social media in the aftermath as he felt had made a mistake for Rashford's opener.

However, Can has defended the 19-year-old, stressing that the Liverpool team shares collective responsibility in every game.

"It was not a mistake from Trent, it was a mistake from the whole team," he added.

"It can happen. It was not just Trent, it was me and it was a few more players. You don't have to criticise him for the goals or anything else; it was the team. We play as a team -- we win as a team and we lose as a team.

"We have to learn from the game, we have to push on and go again on Saturday. We have to try to win that game. We have to try to show a reaction and get the three points."
