Chivas exec: Products around Jose Cardozo was 'over-enthusiasm'

Chivas' imaginative product placement for coach Jose Cardozo's news conference last Sunday has been described as "over-enthusiasm" by club vice president Amaury Vergara.

The image of Cardozo speaking after the 2-1 loss to Santos Laguna in Liga MX play with two soft drinks, two cereals, two milk-based drinks and a beer sponsor in front of him went viral globally, with many memes suggesting it looked like the Chivas manager was the tender in a local shop.

"It definitely didn't look good," said Vergara in an interview with ESPN's Futbol Picante. "It was a small error in over-enthusiasm."

Vergara suggested the club may use a screen to show the products for future matches, instead of actually placing them on the table in front of the coach. The critics rained down on the club for the marketing strategy, especially because Chivas -- who don't have a sponsor on the front of their shirt -- are going through a period of "financial consolidation" and are currently sitting in 17th position in the 2018 Apertura after four rounds of matches.

Vergara strenuously denied that there are any plans underway to sell Chivas and stated the club is not in crisis.

"Right now we are not even a little bit close to thinking about selling the team," said Vergara, son of owner Jorge Vergara. "It's not the first time [we've had difficult times] and as I've said, I have 50 working years left."

Vergara also confirmed the club is also looking for a sporting director.
