Kane joins Lineker and Hurst as England canter to biggest win

Harry Kane is the third England player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup game, emulating the feat of Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final against Germany, and Gary Lineker, who scored one against Poland at the 1986 World Cup in the group stages.

Kane's hat-trick is the 52nd in World Cup history, and the second of this tournament after Cristiano Ronaldo, who achieved the feat in Portugal's 3-3 draw against Spain. Kane's five goals mean he now leads both Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku, scorers of four goals apiece, in the race for the Golden Boot.

This is the first time that England have scored six goals in a World Cup game. Their previous best was four, which they did on two occasions - a 4-4 draw in the group stages against Belgium in 1954, and the 4-2 win after extra time against Germany in the 1966 final at home.

England provided just the fifth occasion of a team scoring five or more goals in the first half of a World Cup match, tied for the second-highest ever after Yugoslavia's six goals against Haiti in the first half of their clash at the 1974 World Cup. Austria scored five against Switzerland in 1954, as did Poland against Haiti in 1974, while the only other occasion was when Germany scored five against Brazil in the 2014 semifinal.

Only one English player -- Lineker with 10 -- now has more World Cup goals than Kane, who has swiftly moved to five goals. Kane first joined David Beckham and Steven Gerrard on three goals, before surpassing them and joining Bobby Charlton and Michael Owen on four goals apiece, and his hat-trick brought him level with Hurst on five. Kane is also the first Englishman to have scored more than one goal in the first two matches of a World Cup for England.

Harry Kane's first penalty conversion to put England 2-0 ahead was the first successful penalty scored by England at the World Cup finals in 16 years, since David Beckham's goal from the spot to give his team a 1-0 win over Argentina in Sapporo during the 2002 World Cup.

Harry Kane and John Stones provided the first occasion in 64 years of team-mates scoring a brace of goals each in the same half of a World Cup game. They emulated the feat of Germany's Ottmar Walter and Fritz Walter, brothers incidentally, who scored two goals each during their team's 6-1 win during the 1954 semi-final over Austria. The two Walters had scored their braces in the second half of the game, though.

Kane is now the first player in 60 years to have had five goals in the first two matches of a World Cup campaign, since France's Just Fontaine in the 1958 World Cup. Kane and Fontaine are two of just three players to have achieved this feat - Hungary's Sandor Kocsis scored seven goals in the first two matches for his team at the 1954 World Cup. Kocsis and Fontaine were the top scorers at each of the World Cups mentioned, with 11 and 13 goals, respectively.

Panama's first World Cup goal came from Felipe Baloy, who at 37 years, 120 days became the third-oldest scorer of a first World Cup goal. Roger Milla of Cameroon was 38 years, 25 days old when he scored a brace against Romania in a 2-1 group stage win at the 1990 World Cup, while Sweden's Gunnar Gren was 37 years, 236 days old when he scored in his country's 3-1 win over Germany in the 1958 semifinal in Gothenburg.
