Nasri quits international football

Samir Nasri has announced his retirement from international football after concluding that he stands little chance of a France recall as long as Didier Deschamps is manager.

Nasi, 27, who won 41 caps, said he was "not happy" when playing for his country and explained that he had spent two years coming to his decision.

The Manchester City midfielder, a controversial omission from France's World Cup squad for Brazil, was banned by the French Football Federation for three games for comments he made to a journalist after their Euro 2012 exit.

He told national newspapers: "With the French national team, I don't feel like it any more. I don't want to be there. I am not happy, I don't want to go there any more.

"My family suffered from this, and I don't want them to suffer. I think it's wiser to stop it and focus on my club career.

"I've been thinking about it since the 2012 European Championship. This is just a confirmation of what I've been feeling."

The former Arsenal player's girlfriend Anara Atanes branded Deschamps a "s--- manager" on Twitter after Nasri was excluded from the France squad for Brazil, prompting the manager to take legal action.

And Nasri added: "Let's face it, as long as he [Deschamps] is going to be the manager, I don't think I have a shot after everything that happened.

"He said he didn't pick me for the World Cup because I wasn't happy on the bench, but I don't know one player who is happy on the bench, especially when you don't understand the reason.

"It's not just about the manager. He did what he thought was best for his team at the World Cup."

Nasri, who made his debut for his country in 2007 but also failed to make the 2010 World Cup squad, hit out at his France teammates for criticising him behind his back.

He said: "The press in France reported that other players were complaining about me. Why would I want to be in a group where other players can't even be honest and tell me to my face if they have a problem with me.

"I really love everything about football, and I've played it since I was five years old. I just want to have as much pleasure as possible and, with the French national team, I don't feel like it any more. So it's better to be focused on Manchester City."

Nasri signed a new five-year contract with City this summer, committing his future to the Premier League champions until 2019.
