Transfer Talk: Manchester United to play Luke Shaw waiting game as Tottenham loom

The transfer window for all of Europe's big five leagues is now closed, but that doesn't stop Transfer Talk from rummaging through the remains of the summer window to scrounge up the earliest bit of gossip about who will be moving where come January.

Shaw keeps United waiting over new deal

Manchester United will have to bide their time before discovering whether defender Luke Shaw will opt to sign a new contract amid continuing interest from Tottenham.

Left-back Shaw, who has re-established himself in the first team this season, is out of contract at the end of the campaign, and the Sun says United "are keen to avoid losing him for nothing."

Although the 23-year-old England international will be offered a hefty increase on his current wages, "he is in no rush to make a decision."

Shaw was criticised by Jose Mourinho last season, but the Sun says the Old Trafford manager "has now told him he figures highly in his plans."

But with his ex-Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino interested, "assurances that he will be United's long-term left-back, having lost the role to Ashley Young last season, would be a key factor" in convincing Shaw to sign new terms.

Chelsea's Sarri eyes Milan defenders

Chelsea might have made a perfect start to the Premier League season with four wins out of four, but manager Maurizio Sarri is planning to make additions, according to the Mail.

It reports that Sarri sees AC Milan centre-backs Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia Caldara as key targets despite Chelsea's having conceded only three goals in those opening games.

However, "a deal for either would be very difficult to get over the line, with Romagnoli having renewed his contract and Caldara only having joined in the summer."

The Mail adds that Milan would be reluctant to let the Italy internationals leave following the return of Leonardo Bonucci to Juventus.

City 'will have to break record for Weigl'

Manchester City are set to bring in midfield reinforcements when winter comes around, but they will need to break their transfer record in order to sign Borussia Dortmund's Julian Weigl.

City boss Pep Guardiola hoped to add Jorginho from Napoli as support for 33-year-old Fernandinho, only for him to choose Chelsea.

The Manchester Evening News says the Premier League champions are keen on Germany international Weigl but cites reports that he would cost almost £70 million, breaking the £60 million record set by the arrival of Riyad Mahrez.

Dortmund are reluctant to sell the 22-year-old, but the Evening News says "recruiting Fernandinho's successor is thought to be a top priority at the Etihad."

Tap-ins

-- Aston Villa are interested in ex-Leicester defender Robert Huth after their hopes of persuading John Terry to return to Villa Park for a second spell were dashed, the Sun reports.

Terry, who helped Villa reach the playoff final, is close to joining Spartak Moscow, and Steve Bruce is ready to turn to free agent Huth, part of Leicester's Premier League-winning team, instead.

-- Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle is proving to be a hit on loan at West Brom, with his form attracting the attention of Chinese Super League sides, according to the Birmingham Mail.

It says Gayle is being watched by several clubs "and could be offered an eye-watering deal worth in the region of £200,000 a week when his season-long spell at The Hawthorns comes to an end."
