Oprah Winfrey jokes she could join Mindy Kaling as Swansea City investor

There were ever so slightly bizarre scenes on British daytime television on Wednesday when the cast of the new movie "A Wrinkle In Time" dropped in for a chat with Lorraine Kelly.

Surprisingly for a couch that seated Hollywood stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, the subject of conversation turned to Swansea City.

As the BBC revealed in December, Kaling is a shareholder in the Premier League club, and the actress confirmed her interest and said she was hoping to take in a match at the Liberty Stadium during her visit to the U.K.

"It's true. Football is such an amazing sport," Kaling told host Lorraine Kelly. "I believe in this team [Swansea] and I think it's a smart choice. I don't think it's going anywhere. I could have picked something a bit closer to my home. But I think it's an adventure."

Kaling's effusive support was even enough to win over Oprah, who proudly declared that she now also "believes" in the Welsh team.

Oprah laughed: "So I now believe in the team, I'll invest in to too!"

Now, Oprah has a net worth of $2.8 billion, according to Forbes, but it seems doubtful she is really looking to turn Swansea into high spenders like Manchester City or PSG.

The BBC reported that Kaling held one percent of the estimated £75 million takeover bid last year that gave control of the club to American sports executives Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien with a 68 percent stake.

That would put Kaling's initial investment at about £750,000 -- or $1 million. And while it's impossible to know if Oprah was being at all serious in her daytime talk-show chatter, at those prices, she could certainly afford to buy in!

"A Wrinkle In Time" is produced by Disney, which also owns ESPN.
